Rev. Dr. Timothy Dwight (1752-1817) was born in Northampton, Massachusetts and graduated from Yale in 1769. His maternal grandfather was Rev. Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758). Dwight served as a chaplain during the Revolutionary War and served in the Massachusetts state legislature. He was ordained as the minister in Greenfield Hill, Connecticut in 1783. He was dismissed from this church in 1795 when he became president of Yale. Dwight published many sermons during his lifetime, as well as popular songs and poems. He served as president of Yale until his death in 1817.
