Rev. Stephen West (1735-1819) was born in Tolland, Connecticut and graduated from Yale in 1755. He was ordained as the minister in Stockbridge, Massachusetts in 1759, following Rev. Jonathan Edwards. The Stockbridge church was founded in 1734 as a part of an Indigenous praying town with a Mohican congregation and the missionary John Sergeant. West served as the minister for nearly sixty years and died in 1819. He published many sermons during his lifetime on subjects such as baptism, atonement, and moral agency.
