Rev. Samuel J. Mills (1743-1833) was born in Kent, Connecticut and graduated from Yale in 1764. He was ordained as the first settled minister of the Congregational church in Torringford, Connecticut in 1769. Mills served as the minister in Torringford until his death in 1833. He published a sermon on singing in 1775. He married Esther Robbins, and their son, Rev. Samuel J. Mills, Jr. (1783-1818) was a missionary and one of the founders of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM).
