Rev. Manasseh Cutler (1742-1823) was born in Killingly, Connecticut and graduated from Yale in 1765. Cutler married Mary Balch, the daughter of Rev. Thomas Balch of Dedham, Massachusetts in 1766. He was ordained as the minister in Hamilton, Massachusetts (then part of Ipswich) in 1771 and continued there until his death. During the Revolutionary War, Cutler served as a chaplain. After the war, he went to Ohio and participated in the drafting of the Northwest Ordinance in 1787. Cutler also served in the United States Congress as a Representative from Massachusetts for two terms. Cutler died in 1823. He published several sermons during his lifetime.
