Rev. Joseph Thaxter (1744-1827) was born in Hingham, Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard in 1768. During the American Revolution, Thaxter participated in the Battles of Concord Bridge and Bunker Hill in 1775 before becoming a chaplain in the Continental Army in 1776. On June 17, 1825, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, he delivered the prayer at the cornerstone laying ceremony for the Bunker Hill Monument. He was ordained minister at Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts in 1780 and served there until his death in 1827. He did not publish any sermons during his lifetime.
