Rev. Dr. Joseph Buckminster, Jr. (1751-1812) was born in Rutland, Massachusetts where his father was minister of the Congregational church. He graduated from Yale in 1770 and was ordained as the minister of the North Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1779. Buckminster continued as the minister in Portsmouth for more than thirty years until his death in 1812. He was married three times, and one of his sons, Joseph Stevens Buckminister (1784-1812), was the minister at Brattle Street Church in Boston. Buckminister published many sermons during his lifetime, including a thanksgiving sermon to mark the end of the Revolutionary War and several funeral sermons.
