Browse the John Cleaveland Jr. sermons
Rev. John Cleaveland, Jr. (1750-1815) was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts to the famous Separatist minister Rev. John Cleaveland and Mary Dodge Cleaveland. He received his theological training from his father. During the American Revolution, Cleveland served in the army, in the same regiment where his father was chaplain. Cleaveland was ordained as the minister in Stoneham, Massachusetts in 1785 and dismissed by an ecclesiastical council in 1794 because of tensions in the community over his second marriage. He next became minister of the North Parish (Second Church) in Wrentham, Massachusetts in 1798 and continued there until his death in 1815. He published several sermons during his lifetime.
