Browse the Jedidiah Bushnell sermons
Rev. Jedidiah Bushnell (1769-1846) was born in Saybrook, Connecticut. He worked as a missionary prior to his ordination at the Congregational church in Cornwall, Vermont in 1803. Bushnell was dismissed in 1836, and died in 1846. He published his farewell sermon to his congregation in 1836.
This collection includes a letter addressed to the CLA’s third Librarian, Rev. Isaac Langworthy, from E. W. Hooker in 1878. The donation included three sermons by Rev. Jedediah Bushnell of Cornwall, Vermont. The letter states: “I commit these manuscripts to you for the Library, not knowing whether it is desired to have such manuscripts deposited and collected there.” Hooker said he received the sermons from another minister, who grew up in the town where Bushnell preached and had been inspired by him. He assigned special significance to the fact that the sermons were from the Revolutionary era, and hoped other ministers would read them and learn from them.
