The First Church of Bethlehem (also referred to in the church records as Bethlem), Connecticut was organized in 1739 with the Rev. Joseph Bellamy as its minister. Bellamy was a graduate of Yale who went on to study with Jonathan Edwards and later founded his own school to train ministers in Bethlehem. He published many sermons and books on theology and remained the minister in Bethlehem until his death in 1790. The second settled minister in Bethlehem was Azel Backus, ordained in 1791. He was dismissed in 1812 in order to become the president of Hamilton College. The First Church of Bethlehem is active today and is a member of the United Church of Christ (UCC).
This collection contains two volumes of church records which include admissions, baptisms, marriages, deaths, disciplinary records, and meeting notes.
