Thomas Webber relation of faith, 1806

In the time of the reformation in this town under Mr Crow I had my attention called up to the state of my soul. These words, "If the righteous are scarcely saved, where shall the ungodly & the sinner appear?" were set home with power on my mind. I was led to see that my heart was enmity against God -- & was totally depraved & sinful I think I was led to feel that I deserved to perish in hell --- & that God would be just, if he had cast me off forever. --- My situa- tion appeared to me distressing & awful, be- yond expression. I fled to what I esteemed duties but could get no relief. I con- tinued for some months in great distress. But I think I was bro't to submit to Gd thro' Jesus Christ ---- to feel the loveliness of the divine character, & the fullness of grace in Jesus Christ. I hope things appeared to me in a new light from what I had ever apprehended before. The bible appeared in a new light ---- Its doctrines, which are dis- pleasing to the carnal heart, appeared to me true & glorious. --- It was, however, some time before I dared to entertain any hope that I was a new creature --- It seemed as tho'
