Asseneth Herrick relation of faith, 1811

Arseneth Herrick; Relation The first thing that called up my at- tention was ^last Feb. Mr S's inquiring into the state of my mind. I found I had lived a stupid life. My sins which once appeared as nothing, now appeared great, & too big to be forgiven. I set myself to pray, & seek God --- But I found my duties were all sinful --- I was such a sinner, I could do nothing aright. My heart rose against God. I found I was an enemy to him, and his salvation. I had tho't I liked the preach- ing we have ---- but I found I was utterly opposed to it. I continued in distress for some months ---- The more I went to meet- ing, the worse I felt. My sins rose to my view - they reached heaven -- & I tho't there was no mercy for me. I afterward felt myself more easy --- but hardly could tell the reason. I greatly feared my conviction was wearing off. But I tho't I could say, "Tho he slay me &c"
