Browse the Nathaniel Gookin sermon notes
Nathaniel Gookin (1656-1692) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the son of Daniel Gookin, an early settler of Virginia and New England. He attended Harvard and graduated in the class of 1675. Gookin was ordained as the minister of the First Church in Cambridge in 1682, succeeding Rev. Urian Oakes. He remained the minister at First Church until his death at the age of 35, and was survived by his wife Hannah and their two children. Although there is little biographical information available about Gookin, at his death, Samuel Sewall noted in his diary that “He was one of our best Ministers, and one of the best Friends I had left.”
