Browse the Moses Hemmenway sermon
Rev. Moses Hemmenway was born in Framingham, Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard in 1755 in the same class as future president John Adams. Adams described Hemmenway in a 1774 letter as “my old worthy learned ingenious Friend Hemmenway.” Hemenway was ordained as the minister of the First Congregational Church in Wells, Maine in 1759. He had several sermons published during his lifetime, including discourses defending the practice of infant baptism, an election sermon in 1784, ordination and funeral sermons, and a sermon for children. Hemmenway served as the minister in Wells for over fifty years until his death in 1811.
