Browse the Joshua Moodey sermons and sermon notes
This collection consists of two volumes of sermons and notes on sermons from Boston-area churches. The first volume consists of sermon notes dated from 1685 and 1688, and include sermons given by Rev. Cotton Mather and Rev. Increase Mather (both of Second Church, Boston), Rev. James Allen (First Church, Boston) Rev. John Bailey and Rev. Samuel Willard (both of Old South Church, Boston), Rev. Michael Wigglesworth, Rev. Samuel Nowell, and others. These notes were likely written by Rev. Joshua Moodey of First Church, Boston.
The second volume consists of sermons and notes for sermons, likely written and delivered by Rev. Joshua Moodey. Rev. Moodey was born in England in 1633 and came with his family to Newbury, Massachusetts as a child. He graduated from Harvard in 1653, and served as the minister at the North Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire from 1658 until 1684, when he was arrested and banned from preaching in New Hampshire for nonconformity. He then went to Boston and served as a minister at First Church, Boston, until 1692, when he returned to Portsmouth. Moodey died in 1697.
