Browse the Eleazar Wheelock sermons
Eleazar Wheelock (1711-1779) was born in Windham, Connecticut. He attended Yale and trained for the ministry. Wheelock was ordained as the minister at the Second Congregational Church of Lebanon in Columbia, Connecticut (then part of Lebanon) in 1735, not long after graduating from Yale. In 1743, Wheelock met Samson Occom, a Mohegan student who became a teacher, minister, and missionary. In 1754, Wheelock established a charity school in Columbia to educate and convert Indigenous people and to train some students to be missionaries in their communities. Wheelock left the church in Columbia in 1770 so that he could establish Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire using funds raised by Occom in England. Wheelock served as president of Dartmouth until his death in 1779.
This collection contains three sermons preached by Wheelock during his time as minister in Columbia, Connecticut.
Materials in this collection have been digitized in partnership with the Connecticut State Library and have been made available through our New England's Hidden Histories project.
