Browse the Congregational Church of Burlington records in Burlington, Connecticut
The Congregational Church of Burlington, Connecticut was organized in 1783 with the ordination of Rev. Jonathan Miller. At that time, the church was located within the Parish of West Britain which had formed an Ecclesiastical Society in 1774. In 1785, West Britain became part of the town of Bristol, and in 1806 the portion of the town which had previously been West Britain separated and became the town of Burlington. Rev. Miller remained minister until his death in 1831, but the Ecclesiastical Society hired Rev. Erastus Clapp to assist him from1823 until 1828. After Clapp was dismissed, the Society engaged Rev. Erastus Scranton as “colleague pastor” to Rev. Miller in 1829. Later nineteenth-century ministers included Revs. James Wright, James Noyes, and Henry Clark.
The church building was constructed in 1804, then moved and enlarged in 1836, and is still in use today. The Congregational Church of Burlington is active today and is a member of the United Church of Christ (UCC).
This collection contains two volumes of church records consisting of the Ecclesiastical Society’s meeting notes, and admissions and dismissions.
