Browse the Church of Christ records in Candia, New Hampshire
The Congregational Church in Candia, New Hampshire was formed in 1771 with fourteen members and Rev. David Jewett, a recent graduate of Harvard, as its first minister. The town of Candia built a meetinghouse in 1766, after separating from the town of Chester. Jewett was dismissed in 1780, and replaced by the Rev. Joseph Prince, previously the minister in Barrington, New Hampshire, who served in Candia from 1782 until 1789. The following year, Rev. Jesse Remington was called to Candia. Remington served as the minister until his death in 1815.
The Congregational Society was organized in 1831 to collect taxes and maintain ownership of real estate for the church. At that time, ownership of the meetinghouse was transferred from the town of Candia to the Congregational Society. The original meetinghouse, built in 1766, was destroyed by fire on January 25,1838. Candia Congregational Church is active today and is a member of the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference.
